Mrityunjaya Mantra

The Mrityunjaya Mantra: A Mantra for Healing

The Mrityunjaya (mrit-yoon-jaya) Mantra was a secret mantra that was only passed along verbally for generations. It is widely known now, as a healing mantra. The recitation of this mantra is believed to cure mental afflictions and sufferings, as well as ridding one of all fears. In particular, one is liberated from the fear of death. It is considered to be a moksha mantra which bestows longevity and immortality.

Whereas the Gayatri Mantra is meant for purification and spiritual guidance, the Mahamrityunjaya Mantra is meant for healing rejuvenation and nurturance.

The Mrityunjaya Mantra:

Om Trayambakam Yajamahe Sugandhim Pushti Vardhanam

Urvarukam Iva Bandhanan Mrityor Mukshiya Mamritat

Simple Translation: I implore you, the Source of the cycle of birth, life and death, to free me from its bondage, make me fearless, and lead me to the absolute truth and bliss.

As stated on Yoga International, the Maha Mrityunjaya mantra restores health and happiness and brings calmness in the face of death. When courage or determination are blocked, it rises up to overcome obstacles. It awakens a healing force that reaches deep into the body and mind.
