Feeling Stiff in Your Lower Back and Hips? Your Sacral Chakra May Need Some Balancing.

sacral chakra

The sacral chakra, known as “Svadhistana” in sanskrit refers to the area located at the sacrum, hips, and sexual organs. This chakra is connected to your creativity, your emotions, your senses. This chakra is also related to your one-on-one relationships and your connection to intimacy.  Its element is Water. This chakra controls your Life Force.

If You Are Experiencing Any of the Following Symptoms, You May Have an Imbalance in the Sacral Chakra:

  • Pain and stiffness in low back and hips
  • Lack of creativity
  • Feeling easily overwhelmed emotionally
  • Closed off or blocked from feeling emotions
  • Sexual and reproductive issues

Ways to Balance Your Sacral Chakra

  • Connect with water: drink water, swim, take a soothing bath.
  • Wear the color orange.
  • Move and stretch your hips.
  • Honor yourself by starting a hobby that provides you with pleasure. For example, dance, paint, sing, draw, exercise your body, garden. Do something that expresses your inner core.
  • Get in touch with your feelings through journaling or therapy.

In Jyotish Astrology, the planet associated with the sacral chakra is Pluto. Pluto represents one’s ability to “change and transform,” and when doing so, one is being “creative.” Work on focusing upon the more earthy, sensuous desires that life has to offer.

The gemstones associated with this chakra that can aid in balancing it out are:

  • Orange carnelian. It will clear and heal this chakra, bolstering your intuition, giving you more accurate “gut feelings” and energizing you.
  • Golden and yellow citrine will help you become more decisive, creative and energetic. This crystal also heals the solar plexus chakra.
  • Golden brown tiger’s eye is an excellent healing crystal for the sacral chakra. It will energize you, rev up your sex drive, balance you emotionally, physically and spiritually and help you feel more flexible.

A Good Daily Meditation to Balance Your Sacral Chakra:

Closing your eyes, take three deep cleansing breaths. Visualize the color orange permeating your sacral chakra. Envision yourself rooted to Mother Earth — the way a tree’s roots are grounded into the earth. Breathe deeply. (Inhale, exhale). Repeat the bija mantra, VAM using a mala. For the greatest impact, chant this sound aloud while you focus your attention on your lower pelvis. After repeating the mantra 108 times, open your eyes slowly as you fill with gratitude.

Key Yoga Poses to Keep Your Sacral Chakra Happy:

  • Squat Pose (Malasana) In Squat Pose, you bring your hips towards the earth and lift your heart towards the sky. Stay in this pose for five to ten breaths to build strength in your feet and flexibility in your ankles, knees, and hips.
  • Bound Angle Pose (Baddha Konasana) In addition to providing a generous stretch for your inner groins and thighs, you can integrate an easy flow in this pose. Experiment with fluttering your knees up and down a few times. Then hold the position with your knees wide open and bow your heart and head forward towards your feet. Roll up through your spine to come back upright, then repeat this spinal roll a few times.
  • Camel Pose (Ustrasana) – This posture provides a wonderful stretch for your hip flexors (psoas muscle) and energy from the earth surges into your body. Protect your spine in this posture by engaging the muscles of your core. Draw your naval towards your spine and lengthen your tailbone towards the earth as you move into the backbend. If you feel any strong compression in your lower back, support your lower back with your hands rather than reaching for your feet. If you feel any compression in your neck, keep your chin tucked towards your chest rather than opening your throat to the sky. Hold the pose for five or more slow, deep breaths. To come out of the pose, support your lower back with your hands and lower your hips to your heels to rest before moving on.

Wishing you peace, love and perfect health.
