06 Jul The Salt of Life: Himalayan Salt
The Charaka Samhita, (ancient Ayurveda text) does not recommend using salt (specifically sodium chloride) on an everyday basis, as it increases pitta and kapha and can exacerbate diseases of the blood. Himalayan salt, on the other hand, may be consumed daily, as it is considered therapeutic. It contains a higher quantity of potassium and a wide variety of more than eighty trace minerals, in the same proportions found in the human body.
Himalayan Salt is an unrefined, unprocessed raw salt that is hand-mined from abundant salt caves that were formed over 200 million years ago as ocean salt settled in certain geologic pockets around the earth. Himalayan Salt can actually aid in overcoming dehydration due to its low sodium and high electrolyte count, (the opposite of what iodized white salt does). Considered one of the purest and most natural form of salts, it’s free from pollutants and toxins.
The most common forms of this salt are Pink salt and Black salt (Kala Namak, in hindi).
In ancient times, Himalayan salt was as famous as ‘White Gold’; and today it is called, ‘Salt of Life’. Its unique cellular structure allows it to store vibrational energy. Himalayan salt adds negative ions that neutralize environmental positive ions that come from electronics like: television, telephone, air conditioners, computers. This salt helps in lifting an ill mental state.
Himalayan Salt is said to help with:
Dental hygiene, as it draws out pathogens, kills bacteria and germs that cause various dental illnesses. Take a small piece of its crystal and dissolve it in water. Gargling with this salt water stops the distress of halitosis and can also aid those suffering from sore and bleeding gums.
Acne/Skin Disorders – Himalayan salt helps in treating acne, especially getting rid of those acne-creating toxins. Try dissolving a bar of this salt in water and using it as a face wash. This salt helps in cleansing and detoxifying the skin. It contains bromine and magnesium that heal the skin allergy linked to dermatitis.
Vascular Health – Himalayan salt supports the healthy functioning of the respiratory system. It also reduces the occurrence of sinus diseases and muscle cramps.
This salt works as a natural hypnotic that helps in regulating sleep patterns, clears the mucus and congestion of the sinuses, prevents muscle cramps, supports a healthy libido, helps reduce the signs of aging, promotes bone strength, regulates blood pressure levels, reduces the development of rheumatism, arthritis and gout.
Himalayan salt is also favored by Yogis as it calms the nervous system. It is milder than normal salt, and is available from good health shops or online.
