On Sacred Ground by Chinmaya Dunster

British-born Chinmaya (formerly Stephen) Dunster is a master of the Indian lute known as the sarod. Known for mixing Indian classical raga with the Celtic styles of his native land, he does it again on his stunning new release, Yoga: On Sacred Ground. Keeping the Celtic vibe while going full speed ahead into the Indian mystic, he has created seven breathtaking tracks that are each linked to one of the body’s seven chakras. Each listener will have to decide whether or not this music is suitable for deep meditation or yoga practice, but the album will definitely soothe the soul. [Read more →]

Heather Jansch: Making Art From Driftwood

Heather_Jansch

Artist, Heather Jansch Artist Heather Jansch was born in Essex in 1948 and studied fine art at Walthamstow and Goldsmiths College in London. Jansch has always had a passion for horses and it is this passion that led her to buy a hill farm in Wales. Having spent several reclusive years breeding Welsh cobs, she then set out to establish herself as a successful painter - a period she describes as her “apprenticeship.”

Taking a sabbatical from commissioned work, she moved to Devon in 1980. Eventually however, wanting to sculpt again, she was drawn back to her roots: the horse. Her earliest pieces of wire and plaster are reminiscent to pieces by Giacometti; followed by her series in copper wire — reminiscent to Da Vinci’s drawings. Yet, they still did not possess the unique quality she was seeking.

You’re probably wondering, “How is this art ‘green?” [Read more →]

Kate Christensen’s, The Great Man

katechristensen-.jpg

From the acclaimed author of The Epicure’s Lament, comes a grand new novel of literary contention in which two competing biographers collide in their quest for the truth about a great artist.

Oscar Feldman, the “Great Man,” is a New York city painter of the heroic generation of the 40s and 50s. Rather than focusing on abstract canvases like Pollock and Rothko, he stubbornly holds to painting one subject alone—the female nude. Upon his passing in 2001, he leaves behind a wife, Abigail, an autistic son, and a sister, Maxine, herself a notable abstract painter. [Read more →]

Ayurvedic therapies

healing-cuisine.jpg

The ayurvedic approach is rising in popularity because it is comprehensive and gentle. Rather than looking for instant cures through prescripition pharmaceuticals, Ayurveda seeks to correct the source of the problem. For those who can commit themselves to the process, Ayurveda offers effective, cumulative health benefits. Believe me, I’m just as skeptical as the next guy, but after suffering with severe ulcers for the past few years and finding no relief from over the counter options, I decided to give Ayurveda a try. All I can say is, “Why did I wait so long?” [Read more →]

Help preserve the environment: Buy electricity generated from environmentally friendly sources without any difference in the level of service

wind_turbine.jpg

Now you can easily do your part to help cut America’s dependence on fossil fuels, including foreign oil by choosing the type of power you purchase. In NY this can be achieved by selecting GREEN Power and WIND Power from ConEdison Solutions.

  • GREEN Power is composed of 65% run-of-the-river hydro and 35% wind power(generated from regional wind and low-impact hydropower sources).
  • WIND Power is composed of electricity exclusively generated from 100% wind power. [Read more →]

His Holiness, The Dalai Lama: Promoting the need for human values

Dalai Lama

His Holiness, The Dalai Lama

I wanted to share with you a great passage from a recent interview his Holiness, the Dalai Lama conducted with Deutsche Welle, (the German international broadcaster).

In the interview, the Dalai Lama stated that his main purpose is not the issue of Tibet, “…but rather the promotion of human values in order to have happier individuals, families and communities — and, in that way, a happier humanity. I consider that to be my contribution. I think every human being has a responsibility to better the world. That’s my conviction, and I always try to promote that. My second goal is the promotion of religious harmony. When I teach in India, more and more Chinese come. Sometimes, the Chinese government puts up restrictions to prevent Chinese from coming to India. But despite that, some Chinese always come. Many of them say that, after seeing the Tibetan community, they found big differences to what they had heard in China. Eventually there’s some positive impact.” [Read more →]

The Center is not always in the middle

helthy-diet.gif

Having evolved among the Brahmin sages of ancient India some 3000-5000 years ago, Ayurveda is a holistic system of healing that is a complete medical system. It recognizes that ultimately all intelligence and wisdom flow from one Absolute source (Paramatman). Health manifests by the grace of the Absolute acting through the laws of Nature (Prakriti). Ayurveda assists Nature by promoting harmony between the individual and Nature by living a life of balance according to her laws. [Read more →]

My Salvation Army: My ecofriendly clothing paradise

Thrift_Store_Finds

Going to the thrift store is green in and of itself!

Way back in 1989, I had no idea that when I was shopping at my local Sunshine Thrift I was actually saving the planet. What I really cared about was $2.00 jeans, but ultimately what I was doing was participating in a grand recycling scheme. People shop at thrift stores for all kinds of reasons - treasure hunters, budget conscious consumers and even professional shoppers alike can be spotted at any local Goodwill on a daily basis. My guess is that most of the people who frequent thrift stores aren’t thinking about eco-friendly products or organic cotton dresses…but that’s OK - because the very act of going to the thrift store is green in and of itself! Change Your Thoughts - Change Your Life: Living the Wisdom of the Tao

Wayne_Dyer

“Rather than look for miracles, see the miraculous in everything.”

Prior to the birth of Jesus, in ancient China, Lao-tzu dictated 81 verses, which are regarded by many as the ultimate commentary on the nature of our existence. The classic text of these 81 verses, called the Tao Te Ching or the Great Way, offers advice and guidance that is balanced, moral, spiritual, and always concerned with working for the good. In Dr. Wayne Dyer’s latest book, Change Your Thoughts - Change Your Life: Living the Wisdom of the Tao , Dr. Dyer reviews hundreds of translations of the Tao Te Ching and has written 81 distinct essays on how to apply the ancient wisdom of Lao-tzu to today’s modern world. This work contains the entire 81 verses of the Tao, compiled from Wayne’s researching of 12 of the most well-respected translations of text that have survived for more than 25 centuries. Each chapter is designed for actually living the Tao or the Great Way today. Some of the chapter titles are “Living with Flexibility,” “Living Without Enemies,” and “Living by Letting Go.” Each of the 81 brief chapters focuses on living the Tao and concludes with a section called “Doing the Tao Now.”

One of the key teachings I keep returning to is, ” There is no way to happiness. Happiness is the way.” It’s all a matter of changing our state [Read more →]
