In Honor of Our Recent Super Moon: Benefits of Chandra Namaskar

written by Anjula August 11, 2014

In honor of this past weekend’s Super Moon, we wanted to work on our Moon Salutation, known as Chandra Namaskar in sanskrit.

Chandra Namaskar: Moon Salutation

Chandra Namaskar speaks to a series of poses performed sequentially to create a cooling flow of movement that is quieting. The beauty of the Moon Salutation is that it can help calm the mind and draw awareness inward. It helps one channel lunar energy; which has relaxing, and creative qualities.

Chandra Namaskar also benefits the body by stretching the spine, hamstrings, and backs of legs; strengthens legs, arms, back, and stomach muscles. Chandra Namaskar is best practiced at night, especially when the moon is visible. While practicing at night, ensure that the stomach is empty. Remember: inhale to extend, exhale to bend.

Accompanying Moon mantra: Om Chandraya Namaha. This mantra vibrates with the energy of the moon. It helps one see things more clearly and look beyond “illusions” to see the deeper meaning in things and the truth that lies within.
